25 Ways to Be a Better Friend

One of my goals this year is to be a better friend. Over the last few years, I have had friends pour out love and blessings over my family and you know how I have returned the favor? By texting them last minute and asking to borrow things and then keeping said things in the back of my car for weeks before returning them (I am specifically referring to a beautiful coat a friend of mine loaned me since all of my coats were in storage when it got cold in Texas – sorry Lacey.)

Having a good friend group is crucial. You don’t have to have hundreds of friends or even 10 friends for that matter. But you should aim to have 3-5 really good friends. Women that you know would drop anything if you needed them, and you would gladly return the favor.

The goal of “Be a better friend” is slightly vague. How do you measure that? Do send out a survey to all of your friends at the end of the year asking if they feel that you have become more or less close? (Answer: No, that would be weird).

So how does one be a better friend?

I started putting together a few action steps to help me work through this goal and I decided it would be great to share my list here with you!

These are just a few ideas to get you started. I suggest writing a few of these in your planner so you are more likely to make time for them. I know all too well about having good intentions but not following through because my calendar filled up.

  • Take them flowers (I love ordering FarmGirl Flowers as gifts)
  • Write an encouraging note (and mail it!)
  • Send a thoughtful text
  • Mail a physical birthday card
  • Put together a care basket
  • Offer to babysit for an afternoon
  • Meet for coffee
  • Organize a girls night
  • Pray for them
  • Take a walk
  • Train for a marathon (ok half marathon… ok a 5K)
  • Start a book club
  • Go to church together
  • Send them a personalized Spotify Playlist
  • Be there during the tough stuff
  • Remember their anniversaries, kids birthdays
  • Bring over dinner
  • Keep them accountable to their goals
  • Help clean up after parties
  • Call or facetime them
  • Put your phone down when you hang out
  • Try a new workout class together
  • Encourage them
  • Take a trip together
  • Go on a double date
  • Start a supper club
