“Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking.” – The Devil Wears Prada
I love that quote from The Devil Wears Prada for many reasons. Number one – there is so much sass in that statement and I am a big fan of sass and sarcasm.
Number two – There is such a truth that mean old Miranda Priestly points out to her staff as they suggest to her that the spring issue of Runway magazine should focus on florals. Duh. Everyone else does florals. What is new and unique about that?
So this month when I was going through the reflections in my Powersheets, I was clearly watching The Devil Wears Prada, and I used that line as a little bit of inspiration to make sure that I am focusing growing what is unique about me instead of trying to build habits or goals that I set just so I can keep up with all the other moms I see on Instagram.
So thanks, Miranda. Great advice. I will try to fit this sassy one-liner into as many conversations as I can this spring. And be reminded that trying to follow what everyone else is doing won’t be the best thing for me.
MARCH 2018 MONTHLY GOALS
Have at least one date night
This is a goal for us every month. In February, we took a trip to the movies (for the first time in a year) and went to see Black Panther, which was awesome. I love a good Marvel movie and Black Panther is definitely in the top 5.
In Houston, where we live, it is currently rodeo season, which is a big stinkin deal. So we will probably take a date night to the rodeo as well as try to get some good quality time in while we are in Mexico this month!
Read 1 Book
I have been working through my 2018 Reading List and fell a little behind in February. So I really need to read 2-3 books to stay on track. Currently finishing “How To Talk So Your Kids Will Listen, and Listen So Your Kids Will Talk” (longest book title EVER) and picking up “Love Your Life, Not Theirs” next.
We are going to Cabo San Lucas this month and I am thrilled to be away from reality for a little while and just focus on my family and enjoying where we are in life. After moving and making several life adjustments over the past few months, it will be nice to just relax for a bit.
I have a few other goals to tackle this month but I can’t quite let you know about them just yet!
Do Something Special For a Friend
I have been writing notes to my friends for the past couple months, which has been fun and wonderful. At this point in the year, I have a bunch of friends who are pregnant or just had babies or are working moms like me and we all feel like we are drowning.
So I want to do a little more to lighten their loads. That may be bringing dinner or babysitting for an afternoon. Taking a few ideas from this post about how to be a better friend.
Work out 3 times a week
Now that the springtime weather has come to Texas, I have been able to take more walks outside which has been amazing. Our new neighborhood has several great walking paths, which have been great to utilize aside from the fact that I have seen actual alligators every time we take a walk.
Our neighbors say that is normal and they don’t bother anything, but it is concerning to me considering the fact that the most wildlife I have ever seen in close proximity is the baby birds that hatched in our backyard a few years ago.
Last month we went to the park on the 3 sunny days that Houston had in February, but March is going to be filled with family fun! We are going to be going to the Rodeo one day so Kinsley can see all the animals at the livestock show (this really isn’t as small town as it sounds). We will get lots of beach time in Mexico and our neighborhood has a few movie night events that would be fun to go to. I love getting to make memories with my sweet little family.
Cook Dinner one time a week
I tried this last month and I rocked it. We are building up our bank of easy family dinners and it is becoming less of a chore. If you have any go-to meals that you love, please leave a link in the comments so I can continue to add variety so my husband doesn’t have to eat tacos every other night.
Read the Bible
Going strong on this into March! They say it takes 30 days to create a habit but even after almost 60 days of reading my Bible every day, it is still something that I have to choose to do daily. It is so easy to put this behind other things like sleep, family time, and scrolling through Pinterest. But it has been really helpful to have my husband tackling this goal alongside me for accountability.
In an effort to improve my writing skills, I am going to be aiming to write something, anything, every day. Even if that is just an outline for a blog post or a creative writing prompt that I don’t share with anyone ever. Should be fun.
